Programs on TV Channels, whether you view them from the local TV station, through cables or Satellite TV are living on the revenue they earn from commercial advertisements only.  Depending upon the slot timings they are charging the business community with hefty sums for showing their commercials which get exposure to millions of people in micro seconds.
If it is prime time slot when the number of TV audience goes sky high or during live relays of events, sports, games etc. the charges demanded by the TV channels for commercials will be so huge that only a few can afford.  While the programs on TV channels are thriving on this unabated income route, there came a blow in the form of Video Cassette Recorders in the 1970s and 80s.  People found these VCRs very useful in viewing anything already recorded in film tapes, particularly their favorite movies and started recording their favorite programs aired by TV channels.
This electronic device of recording programs had an intricate part – a fast forward button – whereby people can skip the commercial ads in a program or movie and enjoy viewing only the main content without hassle. The popularity of VCRs was so huge that there were stores selling VCRs in every street corner in the U.S.
The technology growth introduced their next revolution that made recording TV programs much more easier – Digital Video Recorder or DVR (or Personal Video Recorder – PVR denoting the same thing). Almost all the Satellite TV operators have to invariably install these devices so that the audience can record important programs when they are telecast and view them later on when they please.
There are various types of DVR available in the market – TiVo; Motorola; RCA and Scientific Atlanta. Also there are software packages from companies like ReplayTV targeting PC users that can make their PCs into DVRs.  The DVD recorder manufacturers like Sony, Panasonic and Toshiba offer DVD recorders with a hard drive for transforming them into DVRs as well. Cable companies like Time Warner, Comcast and Cox also provide cable TV packages with DVR facilities.
Here again DVRs have the fast-forward facility so that viewers can skip commercials.  Latest news is some of the TV channels are trying to kill DVRs by their on demand video service, whereby viewers can enjoy their programs whenever they want without adding any new hardware. The secret is they can’t use their fast-forward options and skip commercials!
