It is common knowledge that children are attracted by the visual media.  Earlier it was celluloid that was the only entertainment for children in this regard, even though most of the films produced by the movie world had their targeted audience in adults.  Children’s film festivals, Disney Cartoon Films were aimed at promoting entertainments for children but that were only exceptions and not rules.

Television viewing came as a revolution, because it brought the visual media to the drawing rooms of every home.  Children were the first to get the addiction of TV viewing, rather than the grown up members of the family.  Everything moving in colors and sounds on TV sets caught their attention totally and made them sit with their eyes glued on it.  In fact the business community operating the TV channels was seized of this excellent business opportunity and today cartoons, animations and exclusive children’s programs have grown up a separate sector.

But not all the programs aired by TV channels for them are to their tastes, making the children switch over endlessly with remotes in hand. The parents get embarrassed when their children, accidentally or out of curiosity, stumble upon programs objectionable (like adult only movies) or undesirable (showing cruelty, foul language, vulgar scenes etc.).

To alley the genuine fears of parents, Satellite TV programs have introduced “V-Chip Technology” whereby concerned parents are able to put a block on programming, in accordance with the criteria selected by them.  The parent can exercise this control over programs by using a four digit PIN or password.
The Telecommunications Act of 1996 took cognizance of the disorderly growth of programs with violence, nudity and undesirable scenes and languages and categorized them into different sections for mature audience or children.

In this Internet age, children the world over are accessing the net and graze through the thousands of websites, not all of them are fit for their viewing.  Here also there are software solutions which by installation on the computers can empower the parents from prohibiting access to unwanted websites by their kids.
As far as Satellite TV programming is concerned, the V Chip Technology comes as a blessing to worried parents.
